On August 2nd, 2014, I woke up in England and went to bed in Asia… Okay well maybe not literally, but it was fun to pretend for a day.
I arrived early to Hatley Castle that morning. If the drive down didn’t already wake me, the view of this historical fortress would have done the trick. It was overwhelming, and I hadn’t even made it out of the parking lot yet. As I approached the castle it made me feel small, and a little intimidated. I felt as if I was five all over again; lunch box in hand, ready to attend my first day of school. But this time instead of carrying my peanut butter sandwich, I had a 30 pound bag of camera gear just dying to be put to work.
Resident workers hustled around the property, as though they were preparing for the arrival of the king and queen. Bride Alyssa may not have been true royalty, but she sure was treated like a princess by her knight in shining armour; Sothy.
It was obvious that Alyssa and Sothy not only shared so much love and respect for one another, but for all of their guests as well. They treated their family and friends (and me!) to a night at the Golden City Restaurant. An authentic dim-sum was served, heartwarming speeches were delivered and to cap off the night to a perfect day, the bouquet and garter were tossed.
I learned a few things that day… Fairytales do come true, garter tosses can lead to a near death experience for the photographer, and you can actually eat a jellyfish.
Alyssa and Sothy, I am so excited for you to begin your happily-ever-after.
